Meera Sodha’s BBQ summer specials at Thali Café, Bristol

16 June 2016

Food and drink for 2, gifted in return for a review.

Last week, we popped down to my lovely local Thali Café to check out the new BBQ summer specials on their menu.

I always love visiting Thali Café – the music and vibrant murals really make the atmosphere, as well as the friendly staff. Obviously the food is always delicious, meaning it’s a feast for all the senses.

We both ordered a mango passion fruit cooler and set about deciding what to eat.

We started with the Pani Puri, which we shared to save room for the generous mains. I’ve had these before, and really loved eating with my hands – I guess I’m a big kid and I just like playing with my food. You poke a little hole into the hollow shells and fill it up with the other yummy bits.

I think they’ve changed these up a little – the crispy balls have a slightly different texture now and the little salad you pop inside is tastier than I remember.

Onto the main event – he chose the Northern Thali, and I had the Buttermilk Sigri Chicken off the specials menu.

This slow cooked chicken is so tender and delicious, and you get so much of it that I needed a little help to finish it off! It’s served on a soft naan, along with dal makhani and cauliflower chaat salad – which is amazingly fresh, and the recipe can be found in Meera’s new cookbook Fresh India, out on 7th July.

It’s definitely one of those meals you wish you could eat all day.

Of course, we had to top it off with a dessert. There’s nothing better than something frozen on a hot day, so we both had the chocolate praline kulfi – a handmade caramelised milk ice cream with chocolate and nut praline.

The ice cream was perfectly smooth and creamy, and the nuts were a nice crunchy contrasting texture, however I think they had some coconut in which put me off! I really wish I could get on board with that flavour.

The BBQ summer specials are available at Thali Café now, so get down and try them while they’re still here.
