A walk from Bedminster to Clifton, through Leigh Woods

21 July 2014

A few weeks ago, Doug and I decided to take a lovely summery walk through Leigh Woods, over the suspension bridge and to the White Lion Pub for a much-needed drink.

How to get to Leigh Woods from Bedminster

To get to Leigh Woods, you simply need to walk along North Street in the direction of Ashton Court, passing along the side of Greville Smythe Park and past Riverside Garden Centre. You’ll find the rope swing here, and you should probably stop for a go.

You then follow along the side of the River Avon, passing underneath Clifton Suspension Bridge as you go – more on that later.

Before long, you’ll come across Nightingvale Valley Tow Path Junction – it’s a gate underneath the old railway line, leading up into Leigh Woods.

You made it! Now it’s time to explore.

How to get from Leigh Woods to Clifton Suspension Bridge

If you leave Leigh Woods at the North Road exit, it’s super easy to get to Clifton Suspension Bridge and over into Clifton.

All you need to do is follow North Road in an easterly direction, until you come to a main road. Look to your left – there’s the suspension bridge!

In my opinion, Clifton Suspension Bridge is a must-do if you’re visiting Bristol (unless you’re scared of heights) – it was opened in 1864, after a 30+ year building period. It’s quite the spectacle.

Once you get to the other side, you’re in Clifton, and it’s only right to stop at the White Lion Pub for a well-deserved drink in the sunshine, and the best views of Clifton Suspension Bridge.
